Footers create a level, stable surface for the foundation.  The exterior dimensions of the house are carefully measured and then trenches are dug in the dirt and rock.  Forms are placed in the trenches and then cement is poured into the forms.  The footers are then inspected.

This phase takes only a few days, but may take weeks to schedule.
